ADOPTION PROCESS
Why Adopt From DHS
You will have a chance to save TWO LIVES.
Our pets are all kept in foster homes, but it was not always that way for them. Some of the pets in our program came to us from Shelters that euthanize due to lack of space, some were abandoned or taken in by a good Samaritan who needed help with a pregnant dog or cat, a litter without a mother dog or cat or other reasons. Some were simply unwanted. Until we find forever homes for the ones currently in foster care, we can’t save more lives. Once a pet in a foster home is adopted, we can open our homes and hearts to another life in need.
The pet you adopt will be fully vetted.
This includes, but is not limited to, spay/neuter, vaccinations, micro-chipping, testing for heart-worms and other parasites, and treatment as required. DHS spends an average of $200 in veterinary costs on each pet we rescue. Your adoption fee helps defray these costs.
Get to know the pet you are considering before you make a commitment.
We do this by providing detailed foster evaluations on our website. You have direct contact with the foster parent and can visit your potential new friend in a home environment. The foster parent knows the personality of each foster dog or cat and can advise you on how it will or will not fit into your life. Some fosters do a home visit before finalizing the adoption. DHS also offers a trial adoption period of one or more weeks in which the pet can be returned for any reason.
If the animal you are interested in has any medical or behavioral conditions,
we will also arrange a pre-adoption consultation with one of our veterinarians or trainers.
