I am a DHS foster mom with 5 kittens and 2 cats in my home. Seven cats/kittens is plenty, per my husband. My only defense when I received a call about a stray kitten who was in need of medical help is that it was ONE kitten, not ONE litter! I met a very nice lady in Denton to pick up this tiny kitten she found that was stung by fire ants. One look and I knew that this kitten needed immediate medical attention. I was heading out of the parking lot and calling the vet requesting an emergency visit now.

This little tiny thing could not open his eyes. I thought of a lot of things that would prevent his eyes from opening, but nothing prepared me for the reality of the situation. After he was examined thoroughly, I was told he was stung in his mouth, nose, ears and that the fire ants had even gotten in his little eyes. I almost cried for this brave little fighter. I thought he was a she so I named him Pearl (as in poor pitiful Pearl). They informed me that she was a he so they dropped the P and called this little fella Earl!

I picked him up the next day from the vet’s office and began his process of healing. He had drops and cream for his little eyes. No guarantees were given as to whether he would be able to see anything in the future. You could not touch one spot on him without encountering knots from the stings. I cannot imagine the pain he must have endured and the stamina it took to get him through this. He needed someone in his corner. He is making a full recovery but the progress has been slow. He could barely walk when I brought him home but is now running around with the other kittens. He can see some, and we are hoping that improves with time. His favorite thing is to cuddle with someone.

Thank you for your continued support of kittens like Earl. They are so worth saving. He should be well enough soon to go to his forever home, which would not have happened without you. Thank you, thank you !!

Josey was pulled from a local animal shelter with several other puppies in hopes of avoiding any kind of sickness. Little did we know that she and all the other puppies would become very sick. DHS did everything we could for all the puppies, but Josey was the only survivor.

Josey continued to have some medical issues while she was at her foster home. After many vet visits, we were told that she had survived Distemper. Her symptoms were atypical….and Distemper which is very hard to test for was not something that was considered. Josey will never have adult teeth because of the Distemper but all of her other medical issues have cleared up.

We knew we had to find the right home for Josey – someone to understand how hard she fought to live and her special need with her teeth. Her perfect home came, and her new mamma has done a lot of research and talked with many vets to make sure she is doing everything she can to help Josey live a healthy and happy life. All the foster homes and everyone at DHS would like to thank the Pledge Pals for investing in animals who really need to have guardian angels to help them through these difficult times. Josey will live a long and happy life which is not the ending for many dogs who were as sick as she was. Thank you for being her guardian angel!

Thank you from all the “Josey’s” waiting to be rescued!!

Double Up and Double Down are part of a litter of five motherless kittens who found their way to one of Denton Animal Control’s volunteers. From there, they went home with this Denton Humane Society foster mom. They were about 4 weeks old, weighing from 12 to 16 ounces. They were settled in our hall bathroom, given a dose of wormer and a dab of flea medication. Offered bottles of kitten milk, they all declined as they were already eating solid food.

Double Down quickly developed an eye infection, and the rest soon followed. Diarrhea also soon followed…more wormer, more antibiotics, more eye meds. Everyone’s eyes cleared up except for two, including Double Down, whose eye had become cloudy and would probably stay that way. More vet visits and more meds along with the worse cases of ringworm this foster mom has seen. Normally, kittens their age would have been ready for adoption by eight weeks old—this gang was 4+ months old before we could begin their vaccinations and spay/neuter surgeries.

Kittens have a “shelf life,” and this gang was pushing four to five months before we would list them on the web site. And there they languished for months until we got a call just before Christmas. The potential new mom came about a week before Christmas and picked Scrappy, a brown tabby girl, for her son and was going to pick her up on Christmas Eve. Guess whose eye flared up again after more than six months and was not a good patient? So instead, Double Up whom we considered “the cream of the crop,” went to a new home where an eight year boy was delighted with his new friend. Double Up soon became “Whiskers” and wrapped the entire family around his little paw.

Whiskers’ new mom had thought about adopting a second kitten and called a few weeks later. In short order, Double Down was on his way to a reunion with his best buddy. He hopped right in her carrier. Upon Double Down’s arrival, Whiskers came right up and began washing his face. Reports from their new home say that having the two of them is working out great. Double Down’s eye will always be a little cloudy, but like his brother, he was another very exceptional and loving kitten. His new human pal certainly doesn’t seem to mind.

Foster moms don’t usually get to see the kittens grow up and get to knew their personalities. While three more are still awaiting their homes and will soon be a year old, it has been interesting to watch their personalities develop and change over time. Scrappy, a chunky brown tabby, is still scrappy and too smart. Freckles, a lovely white and orange female, is very svelte and dainty—all girl. Houdini, an orange male tabby, continually changes personalities. He’s gone from all Orange Cat Attitude to Silly, Zippy Cat, never walking when he can run. Houdini is very playful but adores a good tummy rub resulting in the biggest purr and paws kneading the air as he lays on his back. Houdini also has a chronic viral eye infection, but is good about getting his eye wiped…definitely doesn’t slow him down. We’re hoping the remaining three can find homes soon….now that would be a winning hand!!!!

Thank you, Pledge Pals, for your support – it provides the veterinary care and medications these “fur-babies” needed and allows us the privilege of taking care of them for as long as it takes until their “forever home” is found.
